1. What is oxygen analyzer?
â–º An equipment which analyses oxygen concentration being
delivered to the neonate
â–º Small cylindrical device consisting of a galvanic cell with
sensor
â–º Galvanic sensor has two dissimilar electrodes in aqueous
electrolyte KOH
2. What is its principle?
â–º Oxygen diffuses from one side of sensor through
semi - permeable membrane
â–º Oxidation – reduction reaction generates electric current
proportional to oxygen concentration
â–º Current generated is measured and conditioned with
external electronics and displayed on digital meter
3. How to calibrate?
â–º Switch on the analyzer and expose the sensor to the
atmosphere
â–º Displayed value should be 21%
â–º If it does not, control knob is rotated till it reads 21%
â–º The instrument has an accuracy of ± 2%
4. How to use?
â–º After calibration, place the sensor inside oxygen hood
away from the oxygen inflow end of the tubing
â–º Wait for 5-20 seconds as this is the usual time between
placement and detection of the reading (Response time)
â–º Displayed value is the concentration of oxygen
5. What precautions should be taken?
â–º Do not pull or bend the sensor
â–º Always calibrate before measurement
â–º Do not leave oxygen monitor stored with power switch on
â–º Avoid high or low temperature to prevent damage to the
sensor fluid
