1. Learning objectives
â–º Importance of using guidelines to transfuse a baby
â–º Understand the transfusion guidelines to be followed
for packed red blood transfusion in preterm babies
â–º Procedure of giving packed cell transfusion
2. Importance of using guidelines
â–º One may tend to give transfusion when it is not required
â–º Unrequired transfusion may put the preterm baby at
higher risk of complications than term babies
3. Packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion

All the values represent HAEMOGLOBIN levels in gm%
4. Practical points
â–º Cross matching : Required
â–º Dose : 15 ml per kg
â–º Duration : 2- 4 hr
â–º Feeds : Can be continued for a stable baby
â–º Fluids : Withhold the maintenance fluids unless the baby is
being treated for hypoglycaemia or is on ionotropes
â–º Note :
♦ Maintain strict asepsis
♦ Furosemide should not be given routinely
